veloCITY
graduate design exhibition
12 Oct - 4 Nov 2006, Tin Sheds Gallery

Overview

an exhibition of the graduate design programs at the University of Sydney in the Faculty of Architecture, ranging from audio design, architecture, digital media, illumination to sustainable, planning, urban and regional design
encapsulating the newest ideas implemented in art and design creations
adapting to our rapidly changing cultural, built, digital, auditory, interactive and experiential environment

Visitors to the exhibition can view 3D models, plans, posters, lighting, relax in the audio lounge, pedal on the interactive digital media installation, wander amongst ceramics, building designs, understand sustainable solutions, see computational clothing of the future ... between playful and purposeful, technical and aesthetic.

Designing for the future explores technology + design-enhanced living, contemporary and progressive ideas for the modern world, new and emerging technologies, sustainable living, negotiating urban density and information complexity, navigating/deciphering, innovative materials, information representation and sounds.

About

In recent years, cities and technology have conflated into a hybrid medium in which the role of design is rapidly changing.

A medium, literally, is a means of transmission ... the technologies that facilitate, the material content that is transmitted and societal engagement with digital media are changing WITH GREAT VELOCITY. Designing with and for digital media are the objectives of the Digital Media program at the University of Sydney, just one of the programs that will be on exhibition.

In contemporary times, digital media is no longer a one-way conduit. It is often bi-directional, interactive, customizable, experiential, distributed, pervasive, immersive, mobile ... it covers a wider range of technologies from mobile telephony, web design to interactive installation, interactive media on disks, blogging, podcasting, messaging, all wireless transmission protocols, curious rooms, communicating by Bluetooth, WiFi sensors, RF, rss.

Our students design the medium - the methods of conductivity, presentation and utilization of the technology and its content - what you see/hear/feel, the interface and information, embracing new capabilities - immediacy, real time responsiveness, present-day input devices - webcams, sensors, moving beyond mouse and keyboard to more intuitive and direct conversation with computational resources.

The scope of work exhibited in veloCITY ranges from the playful and investigative implementing emerging technologies to the profound and influential, designing sustainable, green and ecological buildings, lighting, creative and cathartic urbanism, engagement with the city, to the intriguing - lighting, acoustics and audio design, wearable computing and physical computing.

Concurrent events: Graduate Information Evening 12 October disseminating information and presentations about the Graduate Programs for future students; the Sydney Opera House model in the adjacent Wilkinson Building Hearth, 23-27 October Research Carnivale poster series celebrating the work of Ph.D students in the adjacent Faculty foyer.
